Hi Ron, If you are deciding to do incremental backups you ideally need to do a incremental level 0 backup before proceeding. RMAN doesn't like doing incrementals if you don't. Also, the size of the RMAN backup dump is actually a lot smaller than you think because it only ever backs up the blocks

Ron Yeah, technically you must perform an incremental level 0 before you can perform the other incremental backups. I think that is what you meant, but I think I saw somewhere that if you have done a complete backup but didn't run it as an incremental level 0, then RMAN won't let you do th

Dennis, Thanks for your comments. I have just received the new 36 GIG drives for the Alpha system and I plan to back the database up to disk and then during the day copy the backups to tape for archival purposes. I tried to use OEM RMAN backup on my test box to play-and-learn but it does no

Ron - Couple of points for you to consider: - If you only have a single Oracle server, you may want to consider using the control file to store the RMAN information. - Ideally, you will have another system with licensed Oracle to host your RMAN catalog. - You can host your RMAN catalog in a

RMAN Users, I am just getting started in RMAN and have a question about the recovery catalog that RMAN uses. Does it have to be an Oracle database that stores the information about the backup if you do not use the controlfile as the source of backup information? For safety and disaster recover

Hi Mike, I've been using the Legato/RMAN combination for a couple of years now. The recovery catalog resides on the Legato Backup server. Once all the database backups finish, we then do a cold backup of the recovery catalog database straight to tape. I don't know what others do, but this if yo

Mike - RMAN has two options - the recovery catalog and using the control file of the target database. If you have only a single system, as I understand the RMAN philosophy, you should use the control file option. Also, from everything I've seen, export seems a fine way to keep the RMAN schema back

I too am using Legato and Oracle, but haven't ventured to RMAN. I will start using it soon. What I plan to do: 1) Put RMAN db/catalog on same server as legato backup server. 2) Cold backup RMAN db to disk daily after nightly RMAN backups. 3) Backup RMAN disk backups to tape for offsite. >>> [

Hi everybody, I've taken responsibility of a couple of Oracle systems on NT (in addition to my nice Solaris DBs). I'm setting up Legato to do the backups online using the Legato Networker Oracle Module. After checking the Legato docs, it seems that the only way of using this module is by
