Thanks for the confidence, Jared. It was introduced in 7.0 and the world
hasn't been the same since.

Tom,
I thought the rules of precedence were for RBO (the R in RBO). Whereas CBO was _intelligent_ enough to choose a path based on information available on hand.

Much as I hate to say that Jared's confidence in Mogens is misplaced, we
must all remember Mogens has now reached the grand old age of 42 and the
brain cells are starting to slip. :)
To be absolutely 100% picky and correct, there was an event setting
introduced in (I believe) 6.0.27-ish that you
7.0.13. Ah yes, I remember that.
Mostly I remember praying that 7.0.16 would
be in the mail RSN.

Pete - I love it when you talk dirty. It will probably only get worse in
the next 24 hours, since - if I recall correctly - you're having the "I'm

I haven't been around that long, but the RBO stands for the Rule Based
Optimizer, it works on a set of rules - best thought of as a
mathematical precedence list. You know the sort of thing Full Table Scan
is worse than anything, a range scan isn't as good as an equality test,
etc etc.
Anybody knows whether rule based optimizer can use bitmap indexes?

Hi,
I'm trying to do a join that is best done by a fast full scan of one
index and a lookup in another. Using the rule-based optimizer and
Oracle 8.1.6, I can't get the optimizer to do what I want. Is there a
way? Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

We move an application that uses
OPTIMIZER_MODE=RULE from Oracle8 to 9i. Most of it is fine, but there are two
queries that have a very different execution plan. In one case, the execution
time increases from less than a minute to more than an hour. Neither query uses
