I have read couple of articles and papers that mention declining population
Dactylorhiza found in Western Himalayas including Nepal. It is mainly due to
illegal collection of tubers to be used in local and exotic medicine. I am
trying to find out the quantity of tubers that are exported or sold
Regarding some other orchids being edible and used as food source, in some
parts of remote areas of Nepal, wild orchids are used as cattle feed. I have
also tried eating seed pods of Dendrobium longicornu. Some native people eat
them to quench their thirst in the summer.

We had presented a poster and a paper on Orchids with medicinal properties
in Nepal in the year 2000 during Nepal-Japan symposium on Conservation and
Utilization of Himalayan Medicinal Resources in Kathmandu. The full paper is
in the proceedings of the symposium. At that time, 53 species of 34 gene
