When I made my original comments about the efficiency of chlorine bleach for
cleaning pots and cutting edges, my intent was to reassure orchid growers,
particularly novitiates, about simple and reliable procedures. I had no
intention of getting into a dispute with AJ Hicks, nor putting words in his mouth.
Egged on by his remarks I have searched the Web for readily available
experimental information on the subject and can confirm that a 1:10 dilution of
pool bleach will destroy virus in a fraction of a second, virtually on contact.
As for bleach corroding stainless tools, I have to believe my own eyes that
it hasn't happened to my stainless steel forceps in 20 years of continual
use. Those who know my credentials would be inclined to trust my advice, but
AJ can do what he likes. Bert Pressman
