Peter O'Bryne kindly provided his perspective on the information (or lack
thereof) with respect to
the pollinator for this species, which is greatly appreciated. He also
indicated the following:
Michael was more right than he knew when he said that "D. suzukii,
sometimes called the Giant Cruentum, may or may not be a separate
species". It isn't a species at all. It is a primary hybrid between D.
cruentum and D. tobaense, and it's correct (registered) name is
Dendrobium Peng Seng. I know the AOS has awarded a plant under the
name "D. suzukii" ... someone didn't do their homework, did they ?
Guido would be laughing if he could read this.... yet another example
of what he's been saying for years.
I happen to own a plant labeled D. suzukii. When it bloomed, it looked awfully
similar to D.
cruentum, only larger. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture, but the images
that I have
collected of both D. suzukii and D. Peng Seng do indicate two considerably
different flowers, the
most noticeable difference being the ruffled shape of the lip of cruentum and
pointed shape of the
lip of Peng Seng. I think it would be hard to call these the same flower. I
have sent a few images
to Peter for additional comments.
