Juli's admonition ["... never to use metal baskets or metal
anythings because the metal oxidizes and harms the plant"] is the stuff that
myths are made of. Yes, metals do oxidize, but what follows from that?
What evidence did the person originally issuing the warning cite?
Does he, himself [or she, herself] carefully remove all trace minerals from
his fertilizers?
Metal anythings covers a wide range of
potential threats. While silver, lead and mercury are particularly
toxic to living things, as is well documented in the literature, iron
and zinc are components of essential enzymes and you had best be advised that
your orchids get enough of them rather than be protected against them.
