         I don't know as "colloidal" silver is truly a colloid; I 
think it's just silver ions in solution, in which case it's no 
different from using soluble silver.

         I've been using silver nitrate in some cultures to control 
ethylene- a common practice. I haven't seen a difference in 
contamination, but I've not studied it for that reason. I do know 
some folks in tissue culture have used silver with some success to 
control bacterial contamination, but have no idea of the concentrations.
