Humidity trays are a myth. The reason for having trays under your orchids is 
to catch the runoff when you water. They do get full of algae. It is unsightly 
but harmless. During the summer, when my orchids are outdoors, I soak all the 
trays in bleach. If the algae bother you, put a small amount of Physan in the 
tray periodically. Clorox fumes may harm delicate plants.
