When it comes to getting rid of the nastiest of plant
pathogens on pots, it is difficult to beat Chlorox or
chlorine solutions. Birmingham University, Department of
Microbiology used to specialise in researching plant virus
infections. They had some very pathogenic isolates. Infact
much more dangerous than anything around in orchid
collections, that could only be worked on under licenced
inspection. For over 13 years I never had a virus cross
contamination and achieved this by soaking  the plastic pots
24 hours in tubs of 10 percent Chlorox, followed by a hose
wash and allowed to air dry. Any residual soil became
bleached too. The research work depended on the level of
pathogen control and gives a good model to follow.
