While going through the BBC website, I saw an article that could be relevant to 
the tessellation folders. They accomplish their missions with cutting but the 
patterns reminded me of the tessellation folds that I have seen.

A new set of "metamaterials" has been created based on intricate, repeating 
patterns found in Islamic art. 
  
Metamaterials are engineered to have properties that don't occur naturally, 
such as getting wider when stretched instead of just longer and thinner.
