I just encountered something similar. It fails under 1.3.8, but works with
1.2.9, 1.4.0 and 1.4.2. Try the latest version.

I have one instance where adding a space makes it work.. without it results in
a badly broken anchor tag.
Example:
This doesn't work :
<%="SOME_TEXT"%>
OUTPUTS:
This works :
<%="SOME_TEXT"%
