Please test that the rpm was not corrupted :
file mpich-ch_p4-gcc-oscar-module-1.2.5.10-2.i586.rpm
and
file mpich-ch_p4-gcc-oscar-module-1.2.5.10-2.i586.rpm
should gives you "RPM vX bin i386 ..." where X=3 or 4
If those are RPMs, maybe the build system is different than the system

Why don't you try to install the Oscar version from CVS instead? I
would assume that the beta version requires some special RPM that is not
installed on the older 2.2.1 release.
