Hi,
I have used VirtualPlanetBuilder (osgdem) to generate the DB and then used
osgviewer to navigate the dted files. It worked fine. Happy !!!

You can try one of the following:
osgEarth (http://www.osgearth.org)
Virtual Planet Builder (
http://www.openscenegraph.org/projects/VirtualPlanetBuilder)
Either will produce a textured terrain model that you can use the OSG
manipulators (or your own custom code) to navigate.
