As far as DEM raster data is concerned you can download it from
http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation/gtopo30/gtopo30.html
for the whole earth for free.
I am not able to find any free source from which we can download the
vector data (texture) for free in the format readable by gdal.

Could you send any other link to graB those data?
