http://www.judeoscope.ca/breve.php3?id_breve=2633 Bush: no war on Islam, Elmasry "not fooled"
The Calgary Sun reports on US President Bush's statements to the UNGA that the West is not engaged in a war against Islam, but rather against extremists, and offers the usual, dismissive "woe is us" response by the Canadian Islamic Congress' Mohamed Elmasry: "Extremists in your midst spread propaganda claiming that the West is engaged in a war against Islam. This propaganda is false, and its purpose is to confuse you and justify acts of terror," Bush said. "We respect Islam - but we will protect our people from those who pervert Islam to sow death and destruction." As thousands of anti-war protesters marched outside the UN yesterday, Bush worked to boost flagging international support for the U.S.-led invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Mohamed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, slammed Bush's appeal to Muslims as empty rhetoric. "He can not fool any Muslims. Muslims are aware of his aggressive policies against Muslim countries," he said. Elmasry also blasted Prime Minister Stephen Harper for bringing more aggression to Canada's foreign policy. http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/World/2006/09/20/pf-1867231.html Bush denies war on Islam Speaks out to world's Muslims By KATHLEEN HARRIS <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> , OTTAWA BUREAU NEW YORK -- America and its allies are not at war with Islam, U.S. President George W. Bush said yesterday, as he called on Muslims to embrace his peace plan for the Middle East. In a 15-minute address to the UN General Assembly, Bush made a direct appeal to citizens to reject extremism and join the fight against terrorism. The modern world is divided by a "great ideological struggle" between terror-inflicting extremists and peace-loving moderates, he said.
