2,000 Iraqis graduate from counter-insurgency training

BAGHDAD — Nearly 2,000 Iraqi police cadets have completed a training
course for counter-insurgency missions.
The Iraqi police have graduated 1,938 specialized officers after an
intensive five-week training course. Officials said the cadets, who
graduated on Dec. 30, were all assigned counter-insurgency missions.
Of the graduates, 1,190 are to serve in the new public order police,
which focuses on counter-insurgency. Another 748 will become members
of the new mechanized police, who will travel in armored personnel
carriers and support missions against Sunni and Shi'ite insurgents.
The public order police will provide security in cities where the
police force has collapsed. They included Fallujah, Mosul, Ramadi and
Samara in the Sunni Triangle.
The Interior Ministry has already established the 8th Mechanized
Police Brigade. The brigade, equipped with Soviet-origin BTR wheeled
armored vehicles, is meant to fight insurgents and major criminals.
"These units require more training and more advanced equipment," said
U.S. Army Col. Lawrence Pippins, Civilian Police Assistance Training
Team program manager for counterterrorism special operations.
"However, once deployed to areas of unrest, they will be effective
because of their training, motivation and morale and dedication to
their country."
The cadets who completed training would be deployed throughout Iraq.
Over the past few weeks more than 1,000 trained officers have been
outfitted, equipped and deployed in support of security operations.
