A 100-year war? Or a draft? (letter to editor) The United States and the United Nations lack the authority, the world support, and the will to enforce the partitioning of Iraq into Shia, Sunni, and Kurdish territories. Whenever we leave, Iraq will instantly become a theocracy, resulting in thousands more assassinations. If the U.S. wishes to beat the insurgents before President Bush leaves office, he should activate the military draft now and promptly add 200,000 or more combat personnel to duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The draft should cost less than losing the Iraq war. Neither retreat nor a 100-year religious war is a viable option. Now is the time to build up our military forces, six to 12 months before any potential need to face possible military action by Iran or North Korea. The mission of the additional forces in Iraq will have to be to seal its borders, secure the entire countryside, and block every road into every city, a strategy employed by Mao Zedong, per Wei Chi, as he defeated Chiang Kai-shek for control of mainland China. We lost Vietnam and the Brits lost Colonial America because of the failure to control the countryside. Daniel B.
