Suspicious packages have been sent to five foreign missions, Parliament
House and the Prime Minister's office today.

Staff at the British High Commission and the Japanese embassy have returned
to work this afternoon after their offices were given the all-clear
following the discovery of suspicious packages.

The powder within the packages was tested and deeemed to be harmless,
authorities said.

The US, Italian and South Korean embassies also received similar packages.
Those embassies are still awaiting results from tests on the packages.

A package sent to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet is also being
tested.

A police spokesman said hazardous materials crews were at the missions.

"The packages have been secured following established protocols for these
types of incidents," the spokesman said.

A package containing white powder was been detected in the loading dock at
Parliament House, officials said.

The Department of Parliamentary Services said the incident has been
contained in the dock area and ACT emergency services had attended.

"The loading dock has been closed, and as a result there will be delays in
the delivery of mail within the building today," the department's Hilary
Penfold said in a statement.

"However, there is no danger to people in the building."
