An Overwhelmingly Muslim Country Can Reach European Standards, Gul
Published: 1/27/2006

ISTANBUL - ''Considering our experiences, we can say that an
overwhelmingly Muslim country can reach democratic standards of
Europe, and keep its own cultural characteristics at the same time,''
Turkish FM Abdullah Gul said late on Wednesday.

Turkish Industrialists' & Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) presented
''TUSIAD Bosphorus Prize for European Understanding 2005'' to British
Secretary of Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs Jack Straw in a ceremony
held at Istanbul's Rahmi M. Koc Museum. ''Straw deserves this award
for his extraordinary diplomatic efforts to help Turkey start its
entry talks with the EU, in the EU summit held in Luxembourg on
October 3rd, 2005'', said TUSIAD in an earlier statement.

Taking the floor at the ceremony, Gul stressed that Straw was a person
who knew well about Turkey, and made significant contributions to EU's
decision to open full membership negotiations with Turkey on October
3rd, 2005.

''We have a common history and a common future vision. And our
European vision is the same with that of the founders (of the EU).
And, this is to create a union of different identities, languages and
cultures. Therefore, Turkey's integration to the EU is very important.
We want a peaceful, stable and prosperous region around us. And, we
cannot achieve this goal without our European friends,'' indicated Gul.

On Cyprus, Gul hoped that Turkey's efforts to find a solution to
Cyprus question would be appreciated.
