Assad: Sezer's Visit Crucial Despite the US By Foreign News Desk Published: Wednesday 06, 2005 zaman.com Syrian President Bassar Assad said that Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's visit to his country in the middle of this month is important. The Syrian leader noted, "Undertaking this visit despite the US, only increases its significance." Speaking to CNN Turk, Assad expressed that the US administration now pays the price for not heeding the warnings made by Turkey, Syria, and Iran into account before it waged war against Iraq. Indicating that Iraq's future remains uncertain, Assad announced: "A military intervention is easy to operate against a country; however, it is very difficult to provide stability after the operation. Iraq's future is uncertain. We might encounter ethnic and religious fragmentations. This might spread to the entire region in a domino effect. This is what we are concerned about." The Syrian leader also claimed that they have accomplished important political and economic developments within the last five years; however, external interference has interrupted reform activities.
