Bangladesh terror group responsible for the Mecca Masjid attack?
Saturday May 19 2007 00:00 IST http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IEU20070518113726 <http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IEU20070518113726&> & HYDERABAD: Was Friday's deadly blast in the 300-year-old Mecca Masjid the handiwork of Bangladesh-based terror group Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI)? Highly placed Intelligence sources revealed to this website's newspaper that the blast had the signature of HUJI. "We knew for the last three to four months that at least six sleeping modules of HUJI were camping in the city and waiting for instructions from across the border. They crossed into the country from the porous eastern border, but, we could neither establish their identity nor their location," a senior intelligence official said. It is believed that one of the six modules might have been activated as early as this morning and directed to carry out the operation. The nature of the improvised explosive and the technology used to trigger the explosion are also typical of HUJI. In the series of blasts HUJI carried out in Bangladesh from 2003 to October 2005, till it was banned, the group used IEDs made with chemical explosives and used remote technology to trigger them. The group is already known for using mobile phones for triggering the IEDs and the same technology was used in Mecca Masjid blast. One of the two unexploded bombs was found at the entrance to the masjid. The remote operator might have planned to trigger it once people begin rushing out of the place of worship soon after the first blast. But, for reasons not known, he could not trigger it, or otherwise the damage would have been much serious. Another officer closely monitoring the investigation said that the bombs could have been assembled in one of the eastern states before being smuggled to Hyderabad by road, the safest possible mode of transport in such cases. HUJI, a militant outfit came into existence in Bangladesh 1992 and is headed by Shaukat Osman alias Sheik Fari. The group is believed to be having close links with Al-Qaeda and the Taliban militia.
