/ed) Bloomberg Distances Himself From Activist NEW YORK news://newsclip.ap.org/[EMAIL PROTECTED] Mayor Michael Bloomberg distanced himself Friday from a left-leaning political activist accused of once saying Jews "function as mass murderers of people of color." Jewish leaders had called on Bloomberg to denounce Lenora Fulani _ an awkward position for the mayor as he courts the support of the Independence Party in his bid for re-election this year. Fulani is a member of the Independence Party's state Executive Committee. "I find these remarks phenomenally offensive. I couldn't disagree more," Bloomberg said on WABC-AM about the comment the Anti-Defamation League says Fulani made in 1995. He urged members of the Independence Party to "stand up and say so as well." The Independence Party, which backed Bloomberg when he first ran for mayor, was created in 1994 as an offshoot of Ross Perot's Reform Party that aimed its message at disgruntled independent voters. Fulani has long drawn criticism from city Jewish leaders _ although party officials have said that some statements attributed to her, and labeled anti-Semitic by Jewish leaders, have been taken out of context. When asked Wednesday about the past remarks, Fulani said: "What is anti-Semitic about it? ... It's raising issues that I think need to be explored." Fulani has also been accused of saying in the past that Zionism is "Jewish Corporate Nationalism" and that Jews "had to sell their souls" to acquire Israel. Bloomberg acknowledged courting the Independence Party but said, "I don't know that I'm courting Ms. Fulani." "When it comes to support of Israel, I don't need to go and defend my record," said the mayor, who is Jewish. "It is clear. It is there."
