Britain release terror suspects

London - More than half of suspects arrested in Britain on terrorism charges
since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States have been released
without charge, official statistics showed on Tuesday.

The Home Office listed a total of 669 released with no further action among
the 1 228 people arrested by British police between September 11, 2001 and
March 31, 2007.

The list which excludes arrests in Northern Ireland showed that 224 have
been convicted in terrorism-related trials, with another 114 lined up for
trial.

The figures include 41 people who have been convicted under the Terrorism
Act and 183 under other legislation including murder, grievous bodily harm,
firearms offences, fraud and false documents.

Another 132 people have been charged under terrorism legislation, while 195
were charged with other criminal offences including murder, grievous bodily
harm, firearms, explosives offences, fraud, and holding false documents, it
said.

The statistics compiled from police records by the offices of the National
Coordinator for Terrorist Investigations did not include recent
terror-related trials.

Not covered by the statistics are the 19 men jailed for their role in major
plots - including four who carried bombs during the botched July 21, 2005
attacks in London and five who planned to build a fertiliser bomb.

Eight people were arrested following failed car bombings in London and
Glasgow late in June. So far three have been charged, one remains in
custody, one is in hospital and three have been freed with no further
action. - Sapa-AFP
