PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- A Hernando County commissioner and his wife are under fire for comments she made about Islam. In a letter to the St. Petersburg Times, Mary Hogan wrote Islam was a quote -- "hateful, frightening religion." Hogan was objecting to the county's assistance to a mosque celebration of the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. She went on to say that quote -- "The stated goal of the Muslim faith is to kill us, the 'infidels.' By providing county employees for their use Hernando County is sanctioning this hateful, frightening religion." Her husband, Republican Tom Hogan is defending his wife's comments. Governor Jeb Bush, who appointed Hogan in August, is condemning the couple's remarks. Two other county commissioners, both Democrats, want Hogan to resign. The Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation's largest Islamic advocacy group, also is calling for his resignation.
