Columnist Fatally Shot in Philippines http://199.181.132.144/International/wireStory?id=615257 MANILA, Philippines Mar 26, 2005 — A columnist for a weekly newspaper was gunned down in the southern Philippines in what a media watchdog described Saturday as part of a continuing wave of killings of Filipino journalists. The gunman, accompanied by a lookout, entered the home of Marlene Garcia Esperat late Thursday in the southern city of Tacurong, greeted her with "Good evening ma'am," then shot her dead in front of her children, police said. There have been no arrests. Garcia Esperat, 45, was a columnist for The Midland Review and is the second Filipino journalist murdered this year. Tacurong's police chief, Raul Supiter, told the group that Garcia Esperat had been assigned two police escorts but she allowed them to go on leave Thursday for the Easter holidays. Her husband, George Esperat, told a radio station that his wife had "many enemies because of her exposes," mostly on corruption and other issues of governance. "I told her earlier to stop, but she just shrugged it off, saying she's just doing her work." Thirteen journalists were killed in the Phillipines last year, making it the world's second deadliest place for journalists after Iraq, according to the International Federation of Journalists. The Brussels-based group has blamed a widespread culture of violence, often condoned by government officials. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> DonorsChoose.
