EU urged to name unsafe airlines By David Millward, Transport Correspondent (Filed: 16/05/2005) Britain is pushing to lift the veil of secrecy operating in a number of European countries over airline safety, ensuring that dangerous carriers are named and shamed across the continent. While Whitehall publishes the names of banned airlines on the Department of Transport website, the same policy does not apply elsewhere within the European Union. Commercial confidentiality laws in some countries prevent many governments from identifying carriers publicly. Britain wants the rest of Europe to fall into line, which would result in the identities of airlines banned by any EU government being made public in every member state. Britain will not admit planes flown by airlines from Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Tajikstan, Sierra Leone, Mauritania and Swaziland from British airspace on the grounds that their governments' safety regime is inadequate. A spokesman for the Association of British Travel Agents said that tour operators had a legal duty of care and therefore would be unlikely to use a banned airline. But Holiday Travel Watch, a consumer body, was less optimistic. "Passengers could find they were presented with a fait accompli," said Peter Brehany, the organisation's operations director. ------------------------ Yahoo!
