Hamas accuses Fatah of revealing Palestinian "military projects"

Gaza- Increasing already-high tensions in the Gaza Strip,
the military wing of the governing Hamas movement accused the rival
Fatah movement Tuesday of uncovering "the plans of resistance in
agreement with the Zionist occupation."
In a written statement faxed to reporters, the Izz el-Deen al-
Qassam Brigades accused a Fatah spokesman of revealing "military
projects" in accordance with serving the Israeli occupation and
"achieving ignoble political goals."

The charge follows a Fatah accusation of Monday, in which
spokesman Abdel Hakim Awad told a news conference that Hamas planned
to assassinate senior Fatah leaders, including President Mahmoud
Abbas, by digging tunnels under a road leading to the border in
northern Gaza Strip.

The road is often used by senior diplomats, including Abbas, on
their way to leave salient toward Israel and West Bank.

Hamas spokesman Mushier al-Masri, said Tuesday that the tunnel had
not been dug by his organization in order to "to assassinate Fatah
leaders."

Tensions between Hamas and Fatah - high since the former replaced
the latter in power after winning elections one year ago - have
exacerbated in the past month after Abbas called for new
parliamentary and presidential elections.

The president was reportedly frustrated at the failure of his
attempts to form a unity Fatah-Hamas cabinet which would win
international recognition and ease the crippling boycott western
countries instituted against the Palestinian government.

It was imposed when Hamas rejected western demands - after it took
power - that it renounce violence, honour past Israeli-Palestinian
agreements, and change its charter to accept Jewish state's right to
exist.

The repeated rounds of talks failed in part because Hamas still
refused to moderate its harsh anti-Israel stance, and in part because
the sides were unable to agree on the distribution of portfolios in
the mooted government.

Although Abbas called for new elections - a call Hamas termed a
"coup" against it - he did not give a date for the poll and said he
is prepared to continue negotiating a unity government.

However, another round of talks failed to get off the ground
Tuesday after factions did not show up for the opening session slated
to begin in Gaza City.

Kayed al-Ghoul, a member of the higher committee of Islamic and
national factions, said the "opening talks have failed," and gave as
a reason "the tense atmosphere in the Palestinian Territories."
