Iran, Russia finalizing satellite deal MOSCOW — Iran and Russia are completing a draft agreement for a communications satellite for Teheran. Iranian officials said Iran and Russia are finalizing an agreement to design, construct and launch the 1,850-kilogram communications satellite. The satellite is meant to facilitate digital cellular phones and television broadcasts. Iranian ambassador to Russia, Gholamreza Shafei, said Teheran and Moscow were resolving bureaucratic obstacles to the Zohreh. He said Iran and the Russian Federal Space Agency discussed the project in November 2004 during talks in Teheran. The Zohreh project has been delayed for more than four years amid disagreements over technical and financial issues. The project was estimated at $300 million and has been stymied over disputes regarding Russian technological capabilities. But Shafei said on Dec. 29 that Teheran and Moscow have agreed to launch joint space projects. The ambassador said the agreement included the construction of satellites and exchange of expertise. Iranian and Russian officials were also said to have stressed expansion of cooperation in space research and construction of satellites. Iran plans to launch three satellites in 2005. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> DonorsChoose.
