Iranians in Iraq Iran's government is one of several states in the region that is operating in Iraq, a Western official in Baghdad said last week. The official said he did not believe that the Iraqi government was penetrated by pro-Iranian Shiites, including the Supreme Council of the Islamic Republic in Iraq. "I do not believe they are operating solely as agents of Iran," the official said. "I think they are Iraqis and they understand where they live and where they don't live." The official said Iranian influence was demonstrated by the fact that during a recent visit to Iraq, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi traveled to Najaf and met with SCIRI leader Grand Ayatollah Sayed Ali Husseini Sistani. Sistani has refused to meet western diplomats. "Iraq needs good relations with Iran," the official said. "Iraq does not need another foreign war. They need things from Iran. They need the Iranians to police their border carefully and prevent the infiltration of weapons or of fighters. I do not think that problem is as big as it is with the Syrian border, but I think it is a concern for the Iraqis and for us." ------------------------ Yahoo!
