Security operation foils major terrorist bomb plot

25 October 2006

Senior garda officers believe they have foiled a plan to launch a
cross-border terrorist bomb attack after recovering a haul of explosives.

Gardai found 12lb of high-grade homemade explosive in a number of plastic
bags that had been stashed in a ditch by the roadside at Kilcorry, west of
Dundalk, Co Louth.

The seizure was made yesterday afternoon after a search and last night
anti-terrorist officers were examining the theory that the explosives were
to have been used by dissident republicans for a terror attack.

Gardai and the PSNI have been keeping a close watch on the movements of
known activists from the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA in the Border
region over the past few weeks.

Officers feared that the renegade republicans would attempt a terrorist
attack in a bid to derail the talks to restore devolved government in the
North and bolster the peace process although they were satisfied that the
recovered haul would not have caused major damage.

Further searches will now be carried out in the Border region to disrupt the
activities of a suspected dissident active unit.

An Army bomb disposal unit from the new base at Gormanston camp in Co Meath
was called out after detectives became concerned about the find.

They found tightly packaged bags of well ground ammonium nitrate fertiliser
and sugar hidden inside a bigger holdall bag which had been concealed in a
ditch. The home made explosive was described as well made although it was
not primed and ready for use.

Gardai believe the package had been left in the ditch for collection. Last
night tests were under way to determine how long the package had been there.

But anti-terrorist officers were satisfied that the explosives were for use
by dissidents.

An Army ordnance officer carried out a detailed examination of the holdall
before giving the all-clear and the mix was then handed back to the gardai
for further tests by members of the technical bureau in the Phoenix Park.

Meanwhile, it emerged yesterday that the Northern parties are to make a
joint pitch for a major economic package to British Chancellor Gordon Brown
next week.

While Sinn Fein and the DUP will be there, it is not yet known if their
delegations will be led by their respective leaders, Gerry Adams and Ian
Paisley.

The November 1 meeting could be the first at which the two men have joined
forces to fight a common cause in seeking financial aid for the North.

They were urged yesterday by Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern and
Northern Secretary Peter Hain to present a united front.
