Israel Military Chief Resigns Amid Lebanon War Probe

(RTTNews) - The chief of Israel's armed forces, Lt Gen Dan Halutz, has
tendered his resignation after military inquiries pinned responsibility
on him for the setbacks in last year's Lebanon war on account of poor
planning, poor strategy and poor execution.

A military spokeswoman said Halutz, told Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and
Defense Minister Amir Peretz that he was quitting "as the investigations
have run their course."

"With the echoes of battle having faded, I have decided to act on my
responsibility," the spokeswoman quoted Halutz as saying in his
resignation letter.

A retired Israeli general, Dan Shomron, who handed a part of the report
last month on the findings of a probe into conduct of the war,
criticized Israeli military commanders for poor planning, poor strategy
and poor execution during the war but stopped short of calling for
Halutz's resignation.

In particular, Gen Halutz is faulted for relying too much on air power
and waiting too long to send in ground troops and when they were finally
sent in, many complained of being poorly equipped.

The July-August military offensive on Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas
drove them from Israel's northern border but failed to free two Israeli
soldiers captured in a cross-border raid last July.
