'God told me to wear rucksack'
Thursday, May 10, 2007 http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=48518 <http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=48518&in_page_id=34> &in_page_id=34 One of the alleged July 21 bombers told a court today that God told him to put a rucksack on when police came to arrest him but he denied wanting to be shot dead. Woolwich Crown Court heard earlier that firearms officers nearly gunned down Yassin Omar when they found him standing in a bath wearing what they feared was a bag filled with explosives. The so-called Warren Street bomber, who fled London dressed in a burka, was arrested in a house in Birmingham six days after the alleged extremist Muslim plot to blow up parts of the capital's transport system failed. Giving evidence for the fourth day, Omar said he turned to Allah for advice and "the decision came to my heart". Stephen Kamlish QC, for co-defendant Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, said: "You didn't know what to do as you heard the noises downstairs. So you sought guidance from God and God gave an answer?" Omar: "Yes, you could say that indirectly." Mr Kamlish: "The answer was put a rucksack on, that's what you're saying isn't it?" Omar: "Yes." The rucksack - which was shown to the jury today - contained a bucket, a mobile phone charger and some Islamic books. Mr Kamlish put it to Omar that he wanted police to kill him: "The man who wanted to die with the Koran on his back." He added later: "You would have been a martyr." Omar, 26, replied: "That is not the case." "If they saw I had a rucksack on me then they would think twice before they shot me, and it worked," he said. "Allah answered my supplication." He earlier told the court he feared being shot by officers after the killing of innocent Brazilian, Jean Charles de Menezes. Omar, from New Southgate, north London and Asiedu, 34, of no fixed address, are among six men accused of taking part in a plot to carry out a series of suicide bombings. The others are Muktar Said Ibrahim, 29, of Stoke Newington, north London; Hussain Osman, 28, of no fixed address; Ramzi Mohammed, 25, of North Kensington, west London and Adel Yahya, 24, of High Road, Tottenham, north London. They all deny charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life.
