News for Arab Countries Special service by AGI on behalf of the Italian Prime Minister's office MEDITERRANEAN: WORLD CENTRE BETWEEN TENSIONS AND CRISES (AGI) - Rome, Oct. 16 - No matter how, the Mediterranean is the center of the world. What happens in its region has international repercussions at a political, economic and religious level. This is the starting point of the convention 'Security in the Mediterranean' promoted by senator Luigi Ramponi's Research Study for Defence and Security. Ambassador Riccardo Sessa argued that the Mediterranean 'is the cradle of the mother of all crises, the conflict between the Arab countries and Israel.' The ambassador in Beijing then emphasised the role played by Italy in lessening the turbulences in the region: 'with the Lebanese crisis Italy brought Europe back to the Middle-East. It has been an efficacious model that could be reproduced.' The economic aspect of the Mediterranean bacine was emphasised by Gianluigi Savio, director of Foreign Transport for Eni: '35 percent of the national supply of energy sources passes through the Mediterranean, both through the Algerian and Libyan pipelines and via the sea. In 2005 ENI carried out 1500 expeditions of oil ships going through the Mediterranean. Sea transport will become more and more important, it will play a primary role, and the Mediterranean remains strategic for the economy of the country.' According to Giuseppe Bono of Fincantieri, two aspects of the Mediterranean emerge very clearly: 'on the one hand it is necessary to guarantee freedom and security of naval traffic which represents a vital need, on the other hand such an intense and strategic naval activity represents a perfect objective for terror organisations that could cause terrible economical, social and environmental damages.' Prefect Pasquale Piscitelli, director of borderline policy forces, said that in the last 9 months of 2006 16,934 clandestine immigrants have landed on the Italian coasts after crossing the Mediterranean: 'immigration comes from the sea and it is the most difficult to fight because criminal organisations thrive on the desperation of these parts of the world. A trip across the Mediterranean costs now 2000-2500 US dollars.' The head of the Airforces, general Vincenzo Camporini, launched an alarm concerning the Atlantic airplanes used in the Mediterranean air controls. They are now obsolete but economic reasons do not allow their replacement. Finally, admiral Paolo LaRosa, chief responsible of the Navy, announced that a rigorous Navy control network managed by Rome will soon be implemented. Many national Navy organisations will give their contribute, such as NATO, EU and the police forces operating in the sea. 'The Italian foreign policy must be have its fundaments in the Mediterranean,' said the organiser of the event, Luigi Ramponi. 'The stability in this area does not only concern Italy, but also the EU, NATO, the UN and the rest of the world. All the events concerning the Mediterranean have serious economic, political and religious repercussions on the world stability.' - [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
