Muslim leader revises anti-Semitic Koran notes

ROME, Italy
An Italian Muslim leader said he is revising a commentary of the Koran
that contains remarks describing Jews as morally duplicitous and as a
people of rejects and swindlers, following protests by Jewish groups.
The Italian translation of the Islamic holy text edited by Hamza
Roberto Piccardo, the secretary of the Union of Islamic Communities in
Italy (UCOII), sparked outrage in the Italian media and protests from
the Jewish community.
In several of the footnotes interpreting the holy text, the
commentator suggests Jews are responsible for their own misfortunes
and accuses them of being "champions of moral duplicity" who consider
"acceptable any wickedness toward non-Jews."
Piccardo told The Associated Press on Thursday that the commentary
contains a view of Judaism he now considers "unacceptable" and that it
has been under revision for the last six months for a new edition of
the translation to be published by the end of June.
Piccardo, who spoke from the northwestern town of Imperia, is among
the leaders of the UCOII umbrella group, one of the largest Muslim
organizations in Italy. Piccardo said he didn't plan an apology.
Piccardo's translation was published in 1994, has sold 140,000 copies
- a best-seller figure for Italy - and is the most widely read
translation of the Koran in Italy, he said. Italy's Muslim population
numbers 800,000, according to estimates.
