Massive drug lab destroyed

NariÑo, Colombia – A huge cocaine-producing compound, with room to
sleep as many as 100 workers, was destroyed by Colombian jungle
commandos on Wednesday.

The raid took place near the river Guiza in the department of Nariño
in the far south-west of the country, on the border with Ecuador.
Nariño is currently Colombia's biggest coca-growing region, with the
cocaine traffic divided between FARC rebels and right-wing
paramilitaries.

The laboratory was in a "zone of influence" of the Mobile Column
Aldana of the FARC.

More than 20 tons of chemicals were seized, but no arrests were made.

A spokesman for the Anti-Narcotics Squad of the National Police told
the Daily Journal, "They hear the helicopters five minutes before they
arrive, and, as the terrain is very wild they can disappear very easily."

Microwave ovens, compressors (for making the cocaine into bricks),
electricity generators, gas canisters and communications equipment
were also captured. The jungle in Nariño is criss-crossed by a network
of small rivers that empty into the Pacific. Cocaine is transported on
high-speed boats into the ocean, and from there to Central America and
eventually the U.S.

This year, the 29th Front of the FARC and the AUC's "Liberators of the
South Bloc" have worked together in smuggling cocaine down the rivers,
despite, theoretically, being at war with each other.
