Nicaraguan Ex-Chief Freed From Detention By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE Published: July 30, 2005 MANAGUA, Nicaragua, July 29 (Agence France-Presse) - Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo, a former president of Nicaragua, was granted permission on Friday to leave home detention, less than two years after he was sentenced to serve 20 years on embezzlement charges. In December 2003, Mr. Alemán was sentenced to 20 years on charges he helped embezzle nearly $100 million from the government between 1997 and 2002, when he was president of this country, one of Latin America's poorest. A judge who rules on prison sentences granted Mr. Alemán conditional release on Monday, citing his poor health. That ruling was revoked on Thursday by the Penal Court of Appeals, but the Civil Appeals Court on Friday reinstated the release order, which allows Mr. Alemán to leave his home, where he is serving his sentence, and move freely within Managua. He would need permission to leave the capital, and he is not allowed to leave the country. A spokesman for the penal court said it would ask the Nicaraguan Supreme Court to decide which of the two courts has final authority over the ruling. ------------------------ Yahoo!
