Over 100 Maoists killed in Nepal ISN SECURITY WATCH (11/04/05) - Nepalese authorities said on Monday that more than 100 Maoist rebels were killed in a prolonged clash last week with government forces in western Nepal's remote Rukum district. The clashes began in the Khara area on Thursday and ended late on Friday after rebels attacked the Royal Nepalese Army's Bhairavi Battalion stationed in the area and were eventually crushed by the government forces. According to an official statement from the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA), government forces have recovered 113 bodies of slain rebels in Khara. The Rukum district, located some 550 kilometers from the capital, Kathmandu, has long been a rebel stronghold. Maoist forces have not commented on the government's statement about the rebel death toll, but did say that the RNA's losses were also high. In separate incidents, Maoist rebels reportedly stormed a jail in central Nepal on Saturday, killing two policemen and freeing some 28 prisoners, including 20 rebels. Meanwhile, Russia joined the chorus of international critics of the government's actions in Nepal over the weekend, following a violent incident in which four civilians were killed and two Russian citizens were injured. Russia condemned the "criminal acts" against peaceful people and urged its nationals not to visit Nepal. "Moscow resolutely condemns yet another crime against peaceful people and no political motives can serve as a justification for such villainous acts," read a Russian Foreign Ministry statement. The Thursday and Friday clashes in Khara were the most violent since King Gyanendra assumed absolute power on 1 February, vowing to crack down on the Maoist rebels. The decade-old Maoist insurgency in Nepal has claimed almost 11'000 lives, as rebels fight to overthrow the monarchy and install a communist government. ------------------------ Yahoo!
