No surprise here. Bruce http://www.debka.com/ DEBKAfile discloses: Pro-Syrian Lebanese president Lahoud harbored Nasrallah during part of the Lebanon War - on orders from Damascus September 20, 2006, 8:39 AM (GMT+02:00) Lahoud was in the audience Tuesday, Sept 19, when President George W. Bush spoke of the "state within a state" created by Hizballah at the opening of the 61st United Nations General Assembly session in New York. In Beirut's Dahya district, bulldozers are clearing the rubble left by Israeli air strikes on the Hizballah stronghold ready for Nasrallah's "victory speech" Friday, Sept 22 (eve of the Israeli New Year festival), after the last Israeli soldier quits Lebanon for the second time in six years. Speaking behind armored glass, the Hizballah leader will sneer at the Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert's taunt earlier this month that while he was free to address half a million people, Nasrallah lurked in a bunker. A giant screen will back his podium showing Hizballah fighters shooting rockets, damaged Israeli tanks and, most of all, portrayals of himself lounging in the sculptured terraced gardens of the presidential palace in Baabde, just outside Beirut. In his speech, Nasrallah will warn UNIFIL troops to confine themselves to aiding the Lebanese army's efforts to assert national sovereignty and refrain from interference Lebanese affairs. He will also call for the expansion of the Siniora government to provide pro-Syrian factions majority control. DEBKAfile's intelligence sources now disclose that when Olmert depicted the Hizballah leader as hiding underground and scared to come out, he and his personal command were in fact the guests of President Lahoud, who was ordered to open the palace to them by Damascus. It was from there that he orchestrated a part of the war under the personal protection of Lahoud and Syrian military intelligence. Israeli generals, after receiving information from intelligence about his whereabouts, could have had the presidential palace bombed or accepted the fact that their prey had again slipped out of reach. Government leaders in Jerusalem held back on the order for an aerial strike for fear of igniting a military clash with Syria. Instead, Israeli warplanes pummeled a Lebanese army camp near the presidential palace without advance warning.
