AT least four people were killed today in a massive explosion at BP's
biggest oil refinery in the United States, the British company and US
television reports said.
BP spokesman Hugh Depland said that the blast occurred at the 486
hectare site at Texas City, just south of Houston, at 6.30am AEDT.

He was unable to confirm the cause or any fatalities.

But reports said that four people had been killed in the blast at the
refinery, which produces 30 per cent of BP's North American oil supply
and three per cent of the entire US supply.

"We got news at about 1.30pm our time of an explosion and a fire at the
Texas City refinery. We are responding to it and we know that there have
been injuries," Mr Depland said.

The Port of Houston Authority denied reports that its channel had been
closed to commercial shipping as a result of the blast.

"The channel remains open and fully operational," authority
communications manager Felicia Griffin said.

According to BP, the Texas City site groups 30 refinery units and
handles 460 million barrels of oil a day. It pumps out enough gasoline
to fill up a car every seven seconds.
