Report: Iran bought WMD components through South Korean firm Iran is continuing to purchase equipment for its nuclear and other arms programs, according to intelligence information disclosed by Germany's Der Spiegel magazine. According to the magazine, Teheran concluded two highly suspicious deals, which were conducted via Iranian and South Korean companies. The French company EADS SODERN was involved, perhaps unwittingly, in one of the deals. The first sale was concluded in December 2004 between Iran's Partoris and Kung-Do Enterprises of South Korea. It involved the sale of 300 units of Nickel-63 for $98,720. Nickel-63 is a radioactive metal that emits electrons and is used to ignite nuclear devices. While nickel has civilian uses, such as in smoke detectors, the proportion of radioactive isotopes that Teheran demanded, requiring transportation in specially protected containers, was far too high for civilian use. The deal also was carried out in secret to avoid detection. Partoris used the cover name Parto Namaje Tolua for the deal. A second deal involved the sale of tritium targets used in neutron emitters that can be used to trigger nuclear bombs. The equipment has both civilian and military applications. The Iranians purchased the goods through the South Korean company from the French firm EADS. . -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
