Report says hate, terror websites on the rise CanWest News Service; Victoria Times Colonist Tuesday, October 17, 2006 VICTORIA - The number of identified hate and terrorism sites is on the rise, most of which are easily accessible by students, according to a new study. The number of terror and hate websites jumped 20 per cent this year to 6,000, according to an annual report released Monday by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. ''The Internet has become a virtual university for terrorists, with manuals from how to build a dirty bomb and make poisons to tutorials on how to use global positioning devices or attack a motorcade,'' said Leo Adler, director of national affairs for the Canadian group, which is affiliated to the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center. The data was collected by researchers ranging from Los Angeles to Jerusalem. Many sites are spawned by political events, such as a cartoon game where gamers shoot Mexicans trying to cross the U.S. border. ''You get extra points if you kill a pregnant woman,'' said Monette Maillet, policy director for the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The explosion of sites can be discouraging, Maillet conceded, but with more public awareness and help from police and community organizations, it is becoming clear such hatred will not be tolerated in Canadian society. ''In Canada we have freedom from discrimination and freedom of expression. When one trumps the other too much, things get out of balance.''
