Fearing outbreaks in the mixed Shiite-Sunni Muslim town, Iraqi security officials blamed the attack on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terrorists not Sunni guerrillas. But police fired over the heads of hundreds of demonstrators. Witnesses reported that assailants clad in Iraqi police uniforms stormed the mosque and overcame the guards.
