Six Sunnis killed, 27 mosques attacked by Shiite Muslims up in arms
over shattering of the golden dome of Imam Ali al-Hadi Mosque in
Samarra, one of the four holiest Shiite shrines

February 22, 2006, 7:22 PM (GMT+02:00)

Senior cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani called for mass protests and
declared seven days' mourning; Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari,
struggling to form a national unity government against this latest
setback to efforts to form a national unity government, announced
three days of national mourning.

Fearing outbreaks in the mixed Shiite-Sunni Muslim town, Iraqi
security officials blamed the attack on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's
terrorists – not Sunni guerrillas. But police fired over the heads of
hundreds of demonstrators. Witnesses reported that assailants clad in
Iraqi police uniforms stormed the mosque and overcame the guards.

A US military spokesperson described the damage to the celebrated roof
as catastrophic. Protesters in the Shiite town of Najef vowed revenge.
