State Department downplays critical remarks by diplomat

(Washington-AP, Oct. 23, 2006 7:28 AM) _ Even though a senior diplomat has
apologized for his critical remarks about U.S. policy in Iraq, the State
Department is playing down his assessment.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack says diplomat Alberto Fernandez
said he didn't think reports of his comments were an "accurate reflection of
what he said." Fernandez had spoken in fluent Arabic to the satellite
channel al-Jazeera.

The Fernandez remarks were translated into English by The Associated Press.

Asked whether the Bush administration believes that history will show a
record of arrogance or stupidity in Iraq, McCormack replied, "No."

Fernandez also said Washington is ready to talk with any Iraqi group except
al-Qaida in Iraq to speed up national reconciliation.
