Terror link to cash card con

Victims of a card-cloning scam in Leigh could be unwittingly funding
international terrorism.

Victims in the town have had money withdrawn from their bank accounts at
locations throughout the Middle East, Africa and Europe, sparking fears
terrorists could be the beneficiaries of the serious organised crime.

Among the sites police are investigating in connection with cloning scam is
the Snax 24 petrol station, in the Fairway, Leigh, which a number of people
visited around the time their cards were cloned.

Among the victims was retired Metropolitan Police officer Len Stanley, 51.

Mr Stanley, of Fairleigh Drive, Leigh, had £2,000 withdrawn from his account
at the International Bank of Hamas, in Beirut, Lebanon.

He said: "My entire pension had gone and some savings - about £2,000. My
money was taken out of the International Bank of Hamas, in Beirut."

Hamas is the majority governing Palestinian movement, but it is outlawed in
the UK under the Terrorism Act 2000.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said she was unable to comment on what the money
from the scam was being used for, but confirmed an investigation was
ongoing.
