Terror suspects admit plot to bomb Manila By DPA Cotabato City (Philippines), Aug 29 (DPA) Three suspected terrorists arrested in the Philippines have admitted to plotting bomb attacks in the capital Manila, a regional police chief said Tuesday. Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao said the three suspects told the police during an investigation that they were paid to carry out attacks in metropolitan Manila. 'During tactical investigation, they admitted to us that they were paid [to carry out attacks in metro Manila],' he said. 'We are still verifying their statements.' Goltiao did not say who allegedly paid the three suspects. The suspects were arrested Sunday in Parang town in Maguindanao province, 960 km south of Manila, while boarding a passenger ferry bound for the capital. Two homemade bombs were recovered from the suspects. Goltiao said one of the suspects was a member of the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which is currently engaged in peace negotiations with the government. 'One of them is a positive member of the MILF,' he said. 'The others, we are still determining their affiliation. They are giving us many names.' An MILF guerrilla leader admitted that one of the suspects was an MILF member but stressed that the three were framed by the military and police. Von Al-Haq, leader of the MILF coordinating committee on cessation of hostilities, said his group would file a complaint over the 'illegal' arrests of the suspects. 'We have witnesses who can attest that the three were framed by the military and the police,' he said. 'The evidence recovered from them was planted.' The arrests were made amid warnings of bombings during the fifth anniversary of the Sep 11 terrorist attacks in the US. According to intelligence reports, two explosive experts of the Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim separatist group, have arrived in Manila to conduct bombings. The Abu Sayyaf has been blamed for some of the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines. It is believed to have ties with the regional Jemaah Islamiyah group and the Al Qaeda terrorist network.
