Thousands protest in Sarajevo against ICJ's verdict

Feb 27, 2007, 15:27 GMT

Sarajevo - More than five thousand people gathered Tuesday in front of
Bosnian state building in downtown Sarajevo to protest a decision by the
International Court of Justice (ICJ) clearing Serbia of genocide.

'We are dissatisfied and disappointed with the ICJ's ruling. We are
unhappy with the fact that Serbia was not declared guilty of genocide
during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina,' Izet Ganic, head of the
Association of the Victims of Genocide said addressing the protesters.

The Hague-based ICJ, the UN's highest judicial body, issued on Monday
its ruling on the case brought before it in 1993 by Bosnia- Herzegovina
against the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (later Serbia and
Montenegro) on the charge of genocide.

According to the verdict, although Serbia was not responsible for
genocide in Bosnia, it had violated the international Convention on
Genocide by doing nothing to prevent war crimes in Bosnia.

'With the verdict like this, Serbia will remain a factor of
destabilization in the region in the future,' said Ganic.

The protesters also called on Bosnia's state institutions for immediate
constitutional changes, which would forbid neglecting the genocide
committed and dissolve the Bosnian Serb entity, the Srpska Republic,
seen as the direct product of genocide during the country's 1992-1995 war.
