U.S., Japan conduct joint ground military exercises in California U.S. Marines and their Japanese counterparts are conducting joint military exercises in California highlighting increased U.S. and Japanese military cooperation. Some 200 members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces ground combat units are participating in an exercise with sailors and Marines known as Iron Fist. The maneuvers focus on amphibious assault exercises. Japanese troops are taking classes in water survival, swim qualifications, naval gunfire and boat operations. The courses are being taught by experts from the Expeditionary Warfare Training Group-Pacific at Coronado Naval Base. The troops will train on an amphibious ship. It is the first training by Japanese troops on the U.S. mainland. The Japanese sought the exercise in a request to the Marine Forces Pacific last summer. A second exercise is planned for later this month when the Japan Self-Defense Forces' Western Group will join the U.S. 1st Army in a 10-day, computer-simulated Japan-U.S. Joint Forces Command Exercise at Kumamoto City's Kengun base. Chinese press reports have said the exercise is aimed at preparing for a future assault on the disputed Diaoyu Islands. Japan, China and Taiwan claim sovereignty over the islands, which Japan calls the Senkaku Islands. Japanese nationalists have sailed to the islands in the past to claim it as their territory. The eight uninhabited islands are located in the East Asia Sea, north of Taiwan and southwest of Okinawa. The largest island is two miles long and less than a mile wide. -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
