US security expert urges terror group vigilance in Indonesia

Last Updated 27/02/2007, 16:14:56

An international security conference being held in Australia has been
told the Indonesian government needs to do more to stop the social
spread of the terrorist group, Jemaah Islamiah (JI).

Speaking in the New South Wales capital of Sydney, visiting United
States security expert professor Zachary Abuza said while the Indonesian
government had done a lot by arresting members of JI, it was not looking
at its involvement in charity work.

Professor Abuza says the Australian government and others in the region
need to be vigilant about the change of JI from a secret society into
one that is trying to expand its influence.

He says it should be of concern to the Australian government because the
Indonesians are probably not taking the matter seriously enough.

Australian security chief declines to specify terrorist numbers

The Director General of Australia's Security Intelligence Organisation
(ASIO), Paul O'Sullivan, says he does not want to specify how many
extreme terrorists there could be in Australia.

Speaking at the conference, Mr O'Sullivan said there had been an
increase in the number of potential radicals in Australia.

He says while Australia's threat level has not changed since 2001, it is
feasible an attack could occur.

Mr O'Sullivan says he does not want to follow the United Kingdom's lead
in outlining exactly what the number of home-grown terrorists could be.
