Yemen Jails Two for Alleged Links to Al-Qaeda, Anti-U.S. Cleric

By Mohammed Hatem - Jan 18, 2011 3:53 AM ET Tue Jan 18 08:53:48 GMT 2011

A Yemeni state security court gave prison sentences to two men accused of
having links to the al- Qaeda terrorist network and helping to publicize the
views of Anwar al-Awlaki, a Yemeni-American cleric who supports violence
against U.S. targets.

Abdulelah Haidar, 34, who works for the state-run Saba news agency, was
sentenced to five years in prison, while Abdul Karim al-Shami, 28, was given
a two-year jail term. Both men were accused of "belonging to an illegal
network" and supporting al-Qaeda between 2008 and 2010.

U.S.-born Islamic cleric al-Awlaki was yesterday sentenced in absentia by a
state security court to 10 years in prison for inciting another man to kill
a French contractor for OMV AG. In a video posted May 23 on websites used by
Islamic militants, al- Awlaki justified the killing of American civilians
and urged Muslims in the U.S. Army to kill their fellow soldiers.

Yemen has been under U.S. pressure to crack down on al- Qaeda since the
group's local wing took responsibility for a failed attempt to blow up an
American airliner in December 2009. U.S. lawmakers said al-Awlaki is
suspected of having ties to a Nigerian accused of trying to detonate
explosives on the plane.
