Al Qaida announces presence in Sinai; Officials see Bedouin insurgents CAIRO - Al Qaida has reported the operation of its network in Egypt's turbulent Sinai Peninsula. Al Qaida has announced the establishment of a network called Al Qaida in the Sinai Peninsula. A statement said Al Qaida was working to transform the peninsula into an Islamic state that would destabilize neighboring Israel. "Enough of ignorance," the purported Al Qaida statement said. Officials acknowledged the statement but denied a significant Al Qaida presence in Sinai. North Sinai Gov. Maj. Gen. Abdul Wahab Mabrouk said the statement stemmed from Bedouin insurgents within Sinai. "The statement was distributed by armed infidel groups in Sinai that are exploiting the current state of deteriorating security," Mabrouk said on Aug. 2. The Al Qaida network claimed responsibility for an attack on a police station in El Arish on July 29 in which at least six people, including a police captain, were killed. The statement said the peninsula's 300,000 Bedouins were being persecuted by the new military regime in Cairo while Sinai's energy riches were plundered. The statement also expressed opposition to the demilitarization of Sinai, mandated by the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Al Qaida said Sinai was being used to besiege the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. The military regime has ordered reinforcements in Sinai as well as a plan to enhance security. Officials acknowledged that so-called Salafists, whose ideology resembles that of Al Qaida, were behind attacks on Sinai's police stations, energy terminals, natural gas pipeline and ports in 2011. On Aug. 2, Islamic insurgents raided El Arish Hospital to retrieve the body of a 19-year-old Palestinian killed in the shootout on July 29. The Palestinian was identified as Ala Mohammed Al Masri, who died from a gunshot wound during a visit to Sinai. Officials acknowledged that the Islamic insurgents were operating heavy weapons, including heavy machine guns, anti-tank missiles and rocket-propelled grenades. They said at least 15 RPGs were fired during the July 29 assault in El Arish.
